Help Areas Hit by Natural Disasters with our Free Service Learning Project

Help Areas Hit by Natural Disasters with Our Free Service Learning Project!

At AutismCanLearn, we believe that teaching students the value of community and helping others is essential. With the recent hurricanes affecting so many families and communities, we are excited to offer our Helping Others: Care Packages service learning project for FREE on our website for a limited time.

Why This Project Matters

Natural disasters leave people in urgent need of essential supplies. Through this project, students will learn how to create care packages that can make a real difference. This is a perfect way for both families and schools to come together and support those impacted by the hurricanes.

How It Works

Our project is designed for students who benefit from short sentences and visuals but can be used by anyone. It walks students through the process of creating care packages, teaching them about compassion and teamwork. The materials include:

  • A short, easy-to-read book explaining care packages
  • Step-by-step instructions on how to put together items like toothbrushes, soap, and water bottles
  • Research activity to find organizations that accept care packages

Where to Find It

You can find this resource for FREE exclusively on our website: https://autismcanlearn.com. It’s listed under "Freebies" and also available on the product page. This offer is available for a limited time, so be sure to grab it while you can!

For those who prefer other platforms, the project is also available for purchase on Boom Learning and TPT. But we wanted to make this special resource available to as many people as possible for free to support families and schools in making a difference.

Get Involved

This service learning project is a great way to help your students or children get involved in giving back. By creating care packages, they not only learn important life skills but also experience the joy of helping others in times of need.

Join us today in supporting those affected by natural disasters. Let’s work together to make a positive impact!

Explore the Presidential Election with Two Engaging Learning Tools!

I’m excited to introduce two new resources designed to help learners understand the U.S. presidential election process in ways that best suit their individual learning styles. Whether your student benefits from visual support or more in-depth content, we have both covered! These resources are now available on my website, Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT), and Boom Learning.

1. Symbol-Based Election Book

Our symbol-based book uses Boardmaker symbols and short, simple sentences to break down the voting process. It’s perfect for learners who benefit from visual aids and straightforward language, such as those on the lower spectrum of autism. This book provides an accessible introduction to key election concepts like voting, the Electoral College, and how the president is chosen.

Available as:

  • PDF, PowerPoint, and Google Slides (on my website and TPT)
  • Boom Learning Deck (audio-assisted)

2. Election Book with Realistic Images

For learners ready for a bit more complexity, we also offer a version of the election book that uses realistic images and more detailed sentences. This version dives deeper into the same key concepts while maintaining clarity, making it ideal for students who are more advanced but still benefit from structured, accessible content.

Available as:

  • PDF, PowerPoint, and Google Slides (on my website and TPT)
  • Boom Learning Deck (audio-assisted)

Why These Books?

Both books are part of the AutismCanLearn series, designed to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities. Whether your student prefers simple symbols or enjoys learning with real-world visuals, these resources make learning about the presidential election both engaging and accessible.

Check them out today and help your learners explore the world of elections in a way that works best for them!

Building Bridges in Entrepreneurship for People with Disabilities: The Vision of AutismCanLearn

Hello readers! I'm Adrianne Horton, founder of AutismCanLearn, and I've been on a unique journey in the field of special education. With my background in Special Education (MSEd from Hunter College) and as a parent to a young adult with autism, I've seen how traditional job paths don't always align with the talents and needs of individuals with disabilities. This challenge is particularly visible in New York, where only 36.9% of people with disabilities are in employment, compared to 73.8% of their peers without disabilities. That is why I have always advocated for the need for people with disabilities to pave the entrepreneur path. However, Hochul's Executive Order 31 is indeed a game changer.

Understanding Executive Order 31

Governor Kathy Hochul’s Executive Order 31 represents a crucial step towards inclusive employment in New York. This order is a testament to New York’s dedication to becoming a model employer for people with disabilities. Its key features include:

  • State Agency Plans: Mandating each state agency to develop annual strategies to enhance inclusivity and hiring of individuals with disabilities.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Agencies are tasked with gathering and analyzing employment data for people with disabilities to set benchmarks and monitor progress.
  • Inclusive Training: This involves creating awareness programs to cultivate an inclusive state workforce.
  • Agency Disability Contacts: Each agency will have designated personnel to steer hiring strategies for people with disabilities.

  • The Promise of Executive Order 31

New York's recent Executive Order 31 by Governor Kathy Hochul is a beacon of hope. It's not just a policy but a commitment to making New York a model employer for people with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in the workforce. This move is a significant step forward in providing equal employment opportunities. It reflects a shift in mindset towards the employment of people with disabilities.
